Every time Jenn and I hit the trail, we have an incredible adventure. [See 6/27 post: June's June Ride] We started out on the Katy Trail at about 10:00 a.m. in the morning... from the trailhead in Calhoun, Missouri. For the first part of the story, take a quick read-through of the Sep-19 post on June Marie's Mystical Mile.
.
After we left our park host, Keith, we saddled up again and headed about seven miles east on the trail to the little town of Windsor. On the way... Danger, Danger Will Robinson! Keep your eyes on the trail lest the surprise dropping of black walnuts send you end over end!
.
As we were both famished, we stopped at the local Casey's when we arrived in Windsor to ask for a lunch recommendation. Windsor is a town of about 3500, so we figured there had to be a Subway or Pizza Hut. Where we actually ended up was soooo much better! On the recommendation of Ruby (one of the locals), we headed off... following behind her as she drove away in her PT Cruiser... to Nita's Place.
Nita's Place was very local... and all said, would seat about 20 diners. The folks at Nita's were very friendly and shared lots of information about their little berg. Below is a photo of Jenn, Nita, and staffer Amanda (who is getting married next Wednesday!).
We rode off the trail and through the streets of the town and found our way into the Windsor Chamber of Commerce. Below is a photo of Jenn and I with the President and second Vice President of the Chamber. The first Vice President happened by while we were in the office and was kind enough to take the photo. They've talked me into considering a run for mayor in 2010. At the very least, we've got a standing invitation to take part in the Windsor Christmas Parade.
We asked about local accommodations in the event we ever used Windsor as a stopover point on a trail ride. At the recommendation of the Chamber, we paid a visit to Floyd... one of the inkeeps of Fern's Bed and Breakfast. It was actually quite charming... and truly took us back to a simpler time.

Also on the recommendation of the Chamber, we checked out a place called Cruce's Cabooses, which was a little closer to Calhoun. Tucked into a little glen with charm galore (complete with a little lake, a hammock and a blue heeler), this is a place that I will want to go back to for an overnight. Isn't American Pie just great? Life is absolutely an adventure. It truly is the little things that make the living great!
One note of interest from the day... on the return ride from Windsor to Calhoun, as we crossed into mile 253, I was thinking about June and said to myself... "June... we're here... in your space... if you're out here today, please come to me as a butterfly." I think you already know the rest of the story. About a quarter of a mile into June's mystical mile, a butterfly fluttered right in front of me and ran smack into my nose. Coincidence? I'm not so sure...

I just LOVE traveling with you!!!
ReplyDeleteA butterfly! On your nose!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you didn't ask her to appear as an ill-tempered badger!
Too cool.
