My experience with ‘diversity training’ has been that it is usually some stock, check box, ho-hum, nowwecansaywediditandmoveon kind of experience.
Today, however, I had a wonderful day-long opportunity to participate in a group facilitated by Tom Gordon …in a seminar titled “Shedding the Virus of Bias and Prejudice — A Practitioner’s Guide to Renewed Caring.”
Going into the day, I brought my own bias…having heard from people I know, trust, and respect that he was a wonderful presenter, but having only the empty shells of previous similar promises from other situations in my past to compare it to. Dr. Gordon came through…in a relevant way. It was a thought-provoking day where a roomful of people did individual work toward shedding their own viruses and prejudice. Below are a few quick pearls that I was compelled to jot down throughout the course of the day:
For Self/System Success:
> mind/s clear…
> performance strong,
> power of ONE…
> impact of ALL.
“In the information age, it is stupid to be stuck on stupid.” ~ Tom Gordon ~
If you have a fear [of anything]… confess it, confront it, deal with it, move on.
Fear, like a virus, must attach to a host. We each have a decision to make…as to whether or not to be the host.
It’s okay to be in the dominant group…as long as you are awake…
We need the folks around us to accelerate our own awareness…because we can’t see all our blind spots.
Every one of us has baggage…and all baggage is subject to inspection.
If you want to truly change the course of events…dismantle the ‘ism.’
People and pigeons are not that different…they both need to eat.
7p Leadership Priorities:
people, principles, paradigms, processes, performance, play, peace
Whatever your personal fear, hang-up, or self-doubt may be…end the statement with…"until today."
