This post is for the Siren...
from this morning's Star:
A literal fire station
Bishopville, SC ~ Firefighter Brian Eargle is accustomed to waking up to fight fires.
But Tuesday night, Eargle said, he was jerked from sleep by coughing and quickly ended up having to fight a blaze at his own fire station.
Eargle managed to escape the fire, call for help and drive two trucks away from the burning building. He then pulled a hose from a fire truck parked outside to fight the blaze for about 10 minutes until his fellow firefighters arrived.

Thanks for taking on this challenge...
so we don't have to, Jenn!!!

Ditto That! Where does courage like that come from, anyways???
ReplyDeleteDrive on DJ!
of course i don't know the logistics of the bishopville fire department, but i wonder why he was alone in the fire station and why the response time for fellow fire fighters was TEN minutes!? maybe its a rural station???
ReplyDeleteRural/Volunteer departments often have a firefighter at the station 24 hours a day so they can drive the fire truck to the fire and the other volunteers meet them at the location of the fire. This speeds up the response times for departments that cannot afford to staff full time.
ReplyDeleteThe departments that cannot afford to operate this way have to first go to the station and get the rig and then drive tot the fire.
10 minutes is actually a fairly good response time for a volunteer department.
If you live in an area with a volunteer department have good insurance because if it catches on fire chances are it will burn to the ground. The volunteer departments work to save surrounding structures etc. They work hard but they have very limited resources and personnel.
A bit of a windy response but...sh#$ happens.
aaaahhh...that all makes sense...thanks for the education, dj! my personal microcosm has all of the comforts of a large urban area, and i sometimes forget what life in a rural area is much different!
ReplyDeletewelcome back...i hope that des moines went well!
